Australian modeller and wargamer, Phill Sporton has kindly sent this contribution. He writes...

"This model is a little beauty, very nicely detailed and from my investigations, very accurate in its layout and proportions. I used Vallejo Wolf Grey and outlined the various barrel and carriage in black wash a common practice these days) combined with the judicious use of a dark blue was in various crevasses. With washes, I have found 'less is more' however I seldom follow my own advice here and usually end up over doing it. The Jacklex Naval gun crew is an excellent little set being easy to pick out the detail and with a little effort the faces of the crew come out particularly well. I do always struggle with white over dark colours but edging the white straps and the like in a black wash helps hide the errors and highlights the shadows.  

I used my usual base techniques of filler followed by Humbrol acrylic 83 applied using a piece of sponge to give texture to the sand colour. I then top this with Tamiya Diorama Texture (Grit Effect) Light Sand and then add various rocks and logs (from the garden) as well as a few model railway tufts. Finally I use my Finescale Model Railways Static Grass applicator over diluted white glue (50% white glue, 50% water) to apply static grass to taste (have you ever been zapped by one of these things? Dang they hurt!). On this occasion I have also raided the 1/72 spare parts box for sandbags and grain bags etc.
